It's rather simple to restart Windows 95/98. Click the Start button, then Shut Down, then select the Restart option, then hold down the Shift key, then click OK. Well, that's actually a lot of clicking, and besides, it takes two hands! If you need to restart as often as I do, you'll appreciate the double click ReStart Windows shortcut. Unfortunately, the instructions for creating the ReStart shortcut are rather involved and many PC neophytes are a bit overwhelmed by them. Also, there's a big complication called DosStart.bat.

In Spring of 1997, I discovered how to create the ReStart shortcut while researching the Floppy Drive Access Bug that causes excessive queries to the floppy drive. I submitted the ReStart shortcut to Neil Rubenking to include in his PC Magazine article, "User to User," but discovered that it didn't work if real mode DOS drivers were loaded by DosStart.bat. After discussing the problem with Neil, he decided not to publish the tip in order to avoid email from users who would find that the shortcut didn't work. Instead, I posted the tip on my website and informed users that they would have to deal with DosStart.bat themselves.

In Fall of 1999, I wrote "ReStart setup" in order to simplify the task of creating the ReStart shortcut and to provide an easy way to get around the problem caused by DosStart.bat. While I was at it, I included the ReBoot and ShutDown shortcuts just because it was easy to program them in at the same time.

Feel free to pass along the URL to http://www.createwindow.com if you think anyone else might be interested in downloading a free copy of ReStart setup.
