Comctl32.dll is an important Windows system file and you should update it whenever a new version is available. Microsoft has been updating it along with Internet Explorer so, if you don't have the latest MSIE, version 5.0 or better, download the installer from the link below.
Why you need it:
The Comctl32 Dynamic Link Library provides functionality for many Windows common controls such as toolbars, list boxes and other items that make up a Windows program as you see it on your monitor. Programmers generally use the most up to date Windows system files when writing programs, but if you have an outdated system file, newly written programs may not run properly on your PC. This can cause random, and often obscure, crashes when the program attempts to link to a function that doesn't exist in an outdated DLL. Additionally, if any program produces a "divide error in module USER.EXE at 0004:000053d9," you need this update.
Compatability:
The DLL installer has been tested on Windows 95 (all OSRs and service packs), Windows 98, and Windows NT 4.0. It will automatically use the correct language for any version. If you have Windows 98 SE (Second Edition), ME, 2000 or XP, then you already have this version of Comctrl32.dll and you don't need the update.
Note, NT 4 users should install Service Pack 4 first.
Installation:
Double-click the downloaded installer file and click the "yes" buttons. When the installer is done, after a few seconds, you have the option to restart Windows now or later. See Restart Windows with a Shortcut for a free program that creates Desktop icons to ReStart, ReBoot or Shutdown Windows.
